On top of rakeback and VIP programs, many poker rooms offer new players sign up bonuses. Bonuses, like rakeback, are in essence a discount on your rake. You have to play a certain amount of hands (i.e. generate a certain amount of rake) to release the bonus money.
In fact, bonuses typically return a much higher portion of a player’s rake than actual rakeback deals. The downside is that a bonus is a one time deal. Once used, you have to wait for the poker room to offer you a new one.
Bonuses share another commonality with rakeback deals: they are essentially free money. If you were going to play at the poker room anyway, there is no reason not to take advantage of a bonus offer!
